Carly Batist

My PhD dissertation research is on the form and function of vocal communication in ruffed lemurs and how acoustic technology can be used as a monitoring tool for conservation.

Education

Prior to the PhD, I received a BS in Animal Science from Cornell University and a MS in Primate Behavior from Central Washington University. My master’s thesis was conducted at the Duke Lemur Center (Durham, North Carolina) and used an experimental paradigm to study social learning comparatively across 7 different lemur species.

Academic Interests

I am a PhD student in primatology at the CUNY Graduate Center (Hunter Primate Molecular Ecology Lab: www.hunterpmel.org), and part of the New York Consortium in Evolutionary Primatology (NYCEP). My research interests lie broadly in non-human primate social behavior and communication (particularly vocalizations). My PhD dissertation research is on the form and function of vocal communication in ruffed lemurs (Varecia spp.) and how acoustic technology can be used as a monitoring tool for conservation. I conduct my research out of PMEL’s Mangevo site in Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar.
